Principles of accessibility and environmental responsibility drive an addition to a stately Colonial Revival. A living suite extends off the first floor, allowing the clients to comfortably navigate their daily routine through wide doorways, compact circulation, and appropriate furnishings.

Avid gardeners, they use the landscape as an extension of the house, so the views prioritize the
backyard. A green-roofed vestibule links the contemporary structure to the historic edifice, taking care not to overwhelm the garden or compete with the home’s architectural detail. Stormwater is managed through a permeable perimeter and rain garden.

Designed to passive house standards, the addition has triple-paned tilt-turn windows and a well-sealed/insulated envelope.
