Block House
LOCATION: Dorchester, MA
CLIENT: Proposal for Boston Housing Innovation Lab
YEAR: 2021

Answering the call of Boston’s Future Decker, we reviewed 13 proposed sites for replicability, access to transit and public amenities, walkability, parking, ease of construction, property value, and the likelihood of solar power. While Dyer Court did not score the highest, its concertation of parcels provided an optimal location to consider a contemporary take on the Boston Triple Decker.

Borrowing the fundamentals of the triple decker as an owner-occupied building, the Block House is conceived as a long-term investment.  The simple configuration can be assembled by a small team. Varied standard block sizes are offered to diversify unit types and building footprint.

Configured from standardized “cartridges,” the units are constructed to anticipate future renovation and expansion. Plumbed kitchen and bath modules are coupled with more flexible bedroom and living areas. Meant to support long term occupancy, these minimal layouts allow owners/occupants to choose how to configure their homes.
