At the center of a frenetic roundabout on Toronto’s Spadina Avenue, the Daniels Building is the restored 19th-century Knox College with a contemporary addition to the north. The path to success required complex phasing to both preserve the heritage of the elegant gothic structure and go beyond the familiar tropes of sustainability to match the University’s pedagogical goals.

Now the home of the University’s Architecture, Landscape, and Urban Design programs, the Daniels Building is a living lesson in architectural history as well as sustainable systems including radiant heating and cooling, automated window hardware for humidity control, voided concrete slab construction, and a green rooftop research lab.
