Energy and Sustainability Designer

Position Overview

West Work is seeking an Energy and Sustainability Designer with 1-3 years of experience to join our growing sustainability and building performance team. This role is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional in architecture, architectural engineering, building science, sustainability, or a related field with a strong interest in high-performance building envelope design, Passive House strategies, and low-carbon construction.

The Energy Designer will work on both residential renovation and new construction projects. Renovation work, including deep energy retrofits, will involve supporting in evaluating existing building performance, designing and documenting high-performance assemblies, and analyzing simulated outcomes using energy modeling software. Occupant health, durability, and adaptive reuse are central to West Work’s mission.  Energy Designers work closely with Project Managers, and design teams to integrate sustainability strategies into projects from feasibility through construction. On new construction projects, the Energy Designer will support Passive House feasibility studies, energy modeling, and sustainability certification efforts. Familiarity with Mass Save incentive pathways is helpful but not required.

Our current energy design portfolio emphasizes multifamily housing, with opportunities to work on civic and higher education buildings.

 

Responsibilities

The Energy and Sustainability Designer will:

  • Review architectural designs through 3D digital and 2D graphic exploration to determine energy saving approaches and recommendations
  • Produce space plans and building programs that increase building efficiency
  • Investigate construction materials and building products to ensure compliance with relevant certification goals and building energy code
  • Evaluate and documenting existing buildings
  • Create client presentations and information graphics
  • Provide  support with energy code compliance pathways for multifamily buildings
  • Assist with decarbonization studies, historic utility data analysis and benchmarking exercises
  • Support the development and documentation of building envelope and energy strategies
  • Participate in meetings with clients, collaborators, and consultants while developing professional communication skills
  • Assist senior staff with Passive House, Enterprise Green Communities, LEED and other sustainability certification processes
  • Support with  preparation of Mass Save reimbursement documentation
  • Support grant and funder applications
  • Participate in construction administration related to sustainability objectives
  • Develop skills in balancing comfortably between architectural design and technical analysis
  • Assist in writing decarbonization and energy model reports with recommendations
  • Review project documentation with guidance from senior staff and learn building science best practices
  • Assist design teams by drafting building envelope details in Revit
  • Participate in internal research, professional development, and continuing education related to sustainability and building performance
  • This role requires a strong interest in building science, sustainability and design, with opportunities for mentorship and professional growth .

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Architecture (NAAB accredited) or Mechanical Engineering
  • 1-3 years of experience in architecture, building science, or sustainability projects preferred
  • Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC), or willingness to complete certification once hired
  • Working knowledge of:

Project Architect

Position Overview

West Work is seeking a full-time Project Architect with 7+ years of professional experience who is passionate about enhancing the built environment through design excellence and sustainable adaptive reuse. Our team values design rigor, curiosity, collaboration, and technical innovation. A successful applicant can expect to be involved in all aspects of project delivery, from feasibility through construction administration. Applicants should have the interest in working directly with clients and ultimately leading projects.

 

Responsibilities

  • Establishing design direction and maintaining conceptual clarity throughout all phases
  • Technical implementation of design intent
  • Communicate clearly and confidently—both visually and verbally—with clients
  • Coordinate consultant teams and ensure quality control of documentation
  • Contributing to strategic growth initiatives within the firm
  • BIM modeling efforts, and drawing production in Revit
  • Review shop drawings, material samples, and construction documents for design conformance
  • Perform or oversee construction administration tasks (RFIs, submittals, change orders, site visits, etc.)
  • You will be involved in all aspects of project delivery—from feasibility studies through construction administration—with the opportunity to guide teams and mentor staff while advancing progressive, climate-responsive architecture.

  • Licensed Architect (or in process)
  • 7+ years of professional experience in an architectural practice
  • LEED AP or Passive House Consultant certification (preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in housing, higher education, and/or civic projects

Project Architect - Western MA

Position Overview

West Work is seeking a Project Architect with 7+ years of professional experience who is passionate about enhancing the built environment through sustainable design and adaptive reuse.
This position is based in Western Massachusetts, supporting projects in the region, and is remote, with occasional travel to our Boston office as needed. The immediate need is project management and design support for multifamily developments in the Berkshires. Both part-time and full-time will be considered.

Architectural Designer, Fall Intern

Position Overview

West Work is seeking a 6-month fall co-op intern for our Boston based firm. Successful candidates should have interest/focus on low carbon materials and net-zero construction for housing, higher-ed, and civic projects. They can expect to be involved in all aspects of projects, from schematic design through construction administration.

 

Responsibilities

Interns may participate in a wide range of activities including marketing, interior library upkeep, research, and graphic support. Project work may include:

  • Developing architectural designs through 3D digital and 2D graphic exploration
  • Producing space plans and building programs
  • Investigating construction materials and building products
  • Evaluating and documenting existing buildings
  • Crafting renderings, client presentations, and information graphics
  • Participating in project administration during construction

 

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Professional Degree in Architecture (B-Arch or M-Arch) from a NAAB accredited school
    • Working knowledge of Revit, SketchUp Pro, AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite
  • A strong interest in building science and technology. Interest in Passive House is a plus
  • Working knowledge of WUFI Passive, THERM, EC3 Tool, and Tally would be great
  • A commitment to learning sustainable design techniques
  • Ability to communicate visually and verbally
